Today is Marilyn Monroe’s 86th birthday.  In the 1960s, Monroe was a major inspiration for Pop artist Andy Warhol who created numerous works of art of the movie superstar. The Marilyn Diptych, for instance, consists of 50 panels of the actress as she appeared in the film Niagara (1953), produced at the peak of her career.

“In the Marilyn Diptych, the image has deliberately been screen-printed without any special skill or accuracy, and the color printing on the right is, at best, approximate.  Yet the Marilyn Diptych is an interesting and impressive work, rising from something deep within Warhol’s psyche.  He was an avid fan of the famous and understood the ephemeral nature of this fame, but he was even more interested in the idea of the American public’s devotion to fame as a cultural symbol of his times.”*  Sister Wendy Beckett
